Activities - Functions

My PhD research aims at addressing carbon dynamics of biomass-derived non-food products (i.e. biomaterials, bioenergy and biochemicals) by modelling and accounting the biogenic carbon flows between the biosphere and the atmosphere along the temporal dimension (short, medium, and long term perspectives). The outcomes are expected to show the relevance of taking into account dynamic accounting aspects and whether such approaches would significantly influence the results and conclusions of environmental impact assessment studies, such as life cycle assessment (LCA). This research is particularly relevant for products with long service life, long carbon sequestration periods and rotation cycles (i.e. the time of biomass growth and re-growth), as well as under consideration of downstream loop-cycle processes of biomass-based wastes and residues. In this context, the ultimate goal is to develop a dynamic accounting method for biogenic carbon accounting (i.e. generation of inventories) within the LCA framework.
