Research scientist

NW

Dr Nathalie Wéry obtained an Engineering Diploma (1997) and a PhD in Microbiology and Biotechnology (2000) of the National Institute of Applied Sciences (INSA) in Toulouse, France. Her research first dealt with microbiology in extreme environments and potential industrial applications (thermophiles from deep-sea hydrothermal vents, psychrophiles from Antarctic soils). After 2 years of post-doctoral position in the Centre for Extremophiles Research of University of Bath (UK), she joined in 2003 the ‘Microbial Diversity’ team of the Laboratory of Environmental Biotechnology (LBE, INRA, Narbonne) as a Research Scientist.

Fate of pathogenic bacteria during the treatment of organic residues

  • Wastewater treatment and REUSE
  • Composting
  • Anaerobic Digestion

In particular, my research are focusing on the following questions:

  • Are ‘regrowth’ of pathogenic bacteria linked to the Viable But Non Culturable’ (VBNC) state?
  • Which microorganisms are released into the atmosphere during waste treatment or during the use of treated residues (compost, treated wastewater, digestates) and which area is impacted by bioaerosols emissions?
  • What is a ‘healthy’ microbiota preventing the invasion by exogenous pathogenic bacteria?
